Twelfth Doctor actor Peter Capaldi has joined writer Neil Gaiman and many other acting stars to lend their support to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR) #WithRefugees campaign.
Joining the likes of Kit Harrington, Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jesse Eisenberg and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett, Capaldi and Gaiman perform in the new and emotional film – What They Took With Them, based on a rhythmic poem of the same name by Jenifer Toksvig. Many of the harrowing images featured in the film are taken from Brian Sokol’s photography project, ‘The Most Important Thing,’ made in collaboration with UNHCR.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is the world’s leading organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting human rights and building a better future for refugees. We are in the field in over 125 countries using our expertise to protect and care for over 55 million people who have been forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution.
Last December Peter travelled with UNHCR to meet Syrian families living in refugee camps and towns and cities across Jordan. Some of his experiences and thoughts were released in January.
“I think what a lot of people don’t understand is that the majority of the people who have been made to flee, they want to go home, it’s all anybody wants to do is to go home. These camps aren’t full of people sitting saying, y’know, it’d be great to go to Europe or it’d be great to go to America or London, whatever, they actually just want to go home… These people would open the door to other people, these people would help, they’ve been through the most terrible experiences and they remained generous. Thats what we have to try and understand, how much the same we all are… People who are caught up in these terrible conflicts deserve the dignity and compassion that we would hope to receive ourselves. Because that’s what you have to just keep reminding yourself, that we’re just incredibly lucky not to be in that position.” – Peter Capaldi
