Steven Moffat Hits Back at John Barrowman, Denies He’s Stopping New Torchwood

Doctor Who Showrunner Steven Moffat has hit back at claims made by Captain Jack actor John Barrowman that he is somehow responsible for holding up a new series of Torchwood, a saga that began when Barrowman told the Radio Times that “egos” and “politics” were stopping the show returning to the air.

Seemingly confirming that it was indeed Moffat who Barrowman referenced in a video released earlier this week on Twitter, the Doctor Who head honcho released a strongly worded statement to deny any involvement in the affair, saying that he had not blocked Torchwood’s return, nor would he do so.

“You may be aware that John Barrowman has been saying, publicly, that I’ve been blocking a new series of Torchwood. To be very clear—I haven’t blocked it; I wouldn’t block it; I wouldn’t even be ABLE to block it. I didn’t even know a revival had been mooted till I read about it on the Internet. As John perfectly well knows, it’s not my show and I could no more prevent it happening that he could cancel Sherlock. I am bewildered, and a little cross, even to be included in this conversation.

For the record, I really liked the show (especially the third series) and would be very happy to see more – monsters and mayhem, why not? But the fact is, it has nothing to do with me. Please pass this on to the anxious and the angry – I’ve had enough hate mail now.”

Steven’s words come after John heavily indicated that he believed Steven Moffat’s departure would open the way for a Torchwood return, Moffat departing Doctor Who at the end of the forthcoming Series 10 to be replaced by Broadchurch‘s Chris Chibnall:

“Without giving too much away I was in phone conversations with one of our executives/exec producers, telling me the obstacles we’d have to face in order to bring [Torchwood] back and i don’t like to see things as obstacles because my feeling is that it’s a good show, it deserves to come back and i’m being told it can’t come back until it’s got approval from certain people involved with Doctor Who and i don’t understand why one show has to have the approval of another in order for it to come back but that might change when somebody leaves, when somebody new and wonderful comes in.”

Fans on Twitter also suggested that Barrowman had more explicitly named Steven Moffat at conventions

For those missing Torchwood, there are two series’ of audio adventures available from Big Finish, with a third planned for 2017. John Barrowman meanwhile will return to the role of Captain Jack, also in 2017, with The Lives of Captain Jack, also from Big Finish.
